Design Research Dissertation / Task 1 (Draft Dissertation)

INSTRUCTIONS

For this part of the project, we are given the task of writing a literature review from 5 articles that link to our research. On top of that, we have to make a literature matrix to create the subheading of our research. We have to check if the article is written by scholars. This methodology section is supposed to explain the research approach, justification, and purpose behind it with appropriate citations. To conclude the review, think about the major trends and the main contributors. How are there gaps in the literature and whether the review should continue and be updated or are you satisfied that any further research would need to take a completely different approach. It is also mandatory to show our progression weekly to our lecturer.

Literature Review Matrix

At the start of our dissertation writing, we all needed to come up with a literature matrix that formed part of the literature review of the proposal. This matrix I developed from the peer-reviewed articles identified in my study on Design Research Methodology. After that, I wrote the first draft of our literature review based on the matrix and the critical reviews completed during the previous semester. On the basis of the suggestions given by Dr. Hayati, I noted down how to make the length of the literature review subsection. I then went to the methodologies and data findings section, which occupied most of my time as I tried to change many wordings to a formal and professional style. There were still some sentences in which the use of first person was discernible, and others in which there was no sequential continuity evident.

Final Draft Dissertation

After diligently completing the final draft of my dissertation, I am now ready to shift my focus to the next module design research dissertation which is to design the visual in order to increase the capability of effectiveness in graphics and communications, these visuals will help communicate my research findings and were critical to improving the standard of my dissertation to the current level. I am ready for the next step to bring out my creativity and design skills to develop good attractive visuals that will help in the understanding view and appreciation of my works. I then start by creating a Mood Board that will allow me to define the main subject of my further investigation, namely Disney princesses. This rich set of icons and moods let me communicate people’s joy and create a series of pictures that express the Disney princess idea. Once I had developed referential vision, I started to pen in the sketch of my visual dissertations where every single icon I included was echoing the glamour and nostalgia of Disney’s most iconic heroines. Thus, the idea of this creative process was to reveal the potential of such characters in the new format.

After receiving feedback on the visual mood board that I’ve made, I started by doing the cover at first. My vision for the cover involves depicting various elements in different styles, some are even black and white (bnw), two dimensional (2D), and then progression to a three-dimensional (3D). This artistic orientation is planned to convey the whole evolution of the princess throughout the story as well as to reflect general changes in sketches and illustrations within the story that move gradually from visually simple and almost two-dimensional to more realistic and complex.

Designing the rest of the visual dissertation was a challenging task and time-consuming too. I needed to spend much time brainstorming and identifying numerous samples in order to devise new concepts. All this detailed research and successive attempts at conceiving a design led to the creation of a visually appealing and distinctive design.

Visual Dissertation

I then had to provide my final draft dissertation to Turnitin for the AI and plagiarism check after I complied with all the changes that needed to be made. After finalizing the changes, I downloaded the KRATE template which our lecturer posted in Google Classroom, and began writing the article. Choosing the right keywords is a significant stage of writing or at least it should be if aspiring to write an article based on the completed dissertation. These keywords are a sort of the backbone of your research simply because they help your article reach the right audience and appear in the right databases. The set of keywords must represent the main themes, topics, and methods of the research so that other people can quickly find your work. The keywords chosen were: Disney Princess, Animation Evolution, Aesthetic Contributions, and Early Disney Animation, which will go a long way in developing a coherent story that will effectively tell the story of your dissertation.

Article Publication

I am honestly relieved to have finished this article and thus this highly stressful and requiring module. In every new landscape, I am entering,  but for all purposes, it has helped me to be more resilient, innovative, and ready to be a more capable learner for my learning in life. I take with me the lessons of this module that represent commitment, hard work, and passion in achieving one’s goals.
