Balance and Emphasis
Balance :
Golden Ratio
One of the design elements is balance. Line, shape, value, and color all contribute to the overall balance. In composition, there are six different forms of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical, approximation symmetrical, radial, horizontal, and vertical. In the preceding task 1 exercise, I explained why this balancing composition exists. When this composition is met, it is also known as balance; golden ratio, rule of thirds, triangle, diagonal.
The triangle
The triangle composition is created when the main focus is the shape of a triangle and has no other main focus outside the triangle. This composition is used in many renaissance paintings. This composition is considered the strongest.
but it's hard to find good art with this composition these days because of how unpopular composition is.
Diagonal
When a diagonal line extends from one point to the opposite, a diagonal composition is used. This art composition is mainly used in baroque arts and landscape painting.
This composition is also very hard to find these days.
Emphasis :
In art, emphasis refers to the notion of creating a focal point to draw attention to a particular aspect. Adding emphasis to your work can assist visitors, collectors, and curators to notice it.
Creating Emphasis in Art
We can create emphasis in art by using these design elements; repetition, movement, and alignment.
Repetition
Repetition will be created when your art has 2 or more composition/main focus on repeat. For example, three same figures in your art as the main focus.
Movement
Movement is when your art can be spotted through the viewer's eyes that your figure or object have movements or action for example; gesture.
Alignment
Alignment is the placement of your object or main focus so they line up to create the right composition.
INSTRUCTION
Our second task was to choose two principles and produce one design for each of them. For the first, I chose repetition since it is the one I am most familiar with, the objection is to build more than two identical figures, resulting in a repeat. I picked movement as the second principle. I believe it will be rather challenging, but I'm not sure why I can't resist taking any other principle.
I remember last week when Weijie was presenting her screen, Ms. Jin Chi said that her wallpaper has the repetition element, I took that as an inspiration because I don't want my repetition to be too identical.
I don't want the rabbit to be the character, so I browse some character inspiration around the internet and I stumble across this image of Kermit the frog.
I find Kermit to be creepy, next step is I searched for a background inspiration and I found this cool picture.
Since I'm a sucker for horror, I came up with the idea of three frogs doing rituals in the forbidden forest on a broken fountain, and this was the final result
I find it to be funny rather than creepy, but it was ok I guess. I tried to make the brighter version of this to see which one is better.
I think I still like the darker version better. The color contrast really brings out something so I made the darker version as my final outcome. I then continued with the second principle I chose which is movement. I was going through my phone to delete unwanted pictures from my phone when I came across this picture of me and my ice skating coach Abraham.
I miss skating a lot. I'm not a great figure skater, but I really love ice skating. I found it to be unique, it's not just a sport, the jumps and spins are also a work of art, really graceful and aesthetically pleasing to look at. I also found a video of myself and my friend making TikTok on the ice rink.
I then searched for a picture of my rink and tries to make it as a background, but I'm going to make it more dramatic.
So after getting all the inspiration I finally came up with this sketch, I gave a motion blur to the legs and arms to visualize the movements, also gave a dramatic snowstorm to have more movements.
I don't think it's the best, but it definitely illustrates the movement principle. After receiving feedback from ms. Jin Chi, I started to do another pose that mainly focus on the legs to give it more movement. I asked my coach for a back scratch spin video to get a good pose.
And after having references for the post I made the second pose, I took the moment he was trying to keep the momentum to do a back scratch spin. I think it was better than the first since it is more dynamic and shows more movement, especially on the legs and arm.
FEEDBACK
Week 3 :
(N/A)
Week 4 :
Ms. Jinchi told me to make some variety out of the drawings I made since I proceed to do the sketch without having any other sketch. She told me to try playing with the brightness for the frog and the pose for the ice skate.
REFLECTIONS
I struggle a lot to execute the idea from my mind to life. I should try to execute the details more to illustrate the idea's on my mind accurately. Ms. Jin Chi's advice really helps me improve especially on the ice skates. I also should've tried other sketches before proceeding to color it.
