LECTURES

Week 1 :

We were having our first class, and our lecturer Mr. Martin introduced himself and gave us an overview of the module Digital Photography & Imaging. We were told that the purpose of this module is to master photoshop. Mr. Martin provided us with some tips and videos about the fundamental of photoshop, as well as a module booklet outlining the future assignment we will be having. He then instructed us to play "The Bezier Game" in order to master the pen tool, which is photoshop's most basic tool.

From this, I understand to put the anchor point on the edges.

It also gave us the instruction to have a clear straight line.

I then learned how to create curves after seeing the instructions.

Importance of photoshop for a graphic designer

Photoshop is the most widely used image-altering software in the digital world. It's no surprise that the tool is the standard industry application because it's so comprehensive. It may also be used for any type of art, such as website design, digital painting, picture editing, and even advertisement creation.

Digital Imaging

The construction of a digital representation of the visual qualities of an item, such as a physical scene or the inner structure of an object, is known as digital imaging or digital image acquisition. The processing, compression, storage, printing, and presentation of such pictures are frequently thought to be included in the phrase.

Photograph Manipulation

The modification or alteration of an image using various methods and techniques to accomplish desired outcomes is known as photograph manipulation.

Art Composition

Every art form, whether photography or painting, requires composition. There are many different kind of art compositions, such as the golden ratio, rule of thirds, triangles, golden sections, and so on. Composition is important because it determines how each work of art is laid out and structured, as well as how the subject is viewed and comprehended. It guides the viewer's eye through the image and draws attention to the main point.

Golden ratio is the most common art composition of all. This composition may be seen in wide range of art from the middle ages to the present day

The triangle is the most unique art composition because the main focus is only shown in a triangle form. This composition is uncommon to come across these days since it's difficult to execute and even if so, it’s difficult to make look good.

Rule of third is commonly used in photography. The photo is divided into three section and the main focus have to stay between 2/3 of the frame

Golden section is when the main focus took all over the spaces, meaning it shows in every frame of the photo.

Photoshop Introduction:

  • Move tool assists you in positioning chosen content or layers.
  • Lasso tool is handy for creating freeform selection borders segments.
  • Crop tool removes the area of a picture that surrounds the selection.
  • Spot healing brush is used to clone parts of a picture and blend the pixels from the sampled region with the target area in a smooth manner.
  • Clone Stamp tool is effective when you need to copy exact detail and color from one part of an image to another area.
  • Eraser tool moved pixels clear to clean them up, leaving no marks in the pixels where the brush was moved.
  • Blur tool is used to apply a blur effect to particular regions of an image.
  • Pen tool set strokes, curves, lines, and fill the drawing.
  • Direct selection tool is used to pick, move, or edit routes or forms.
  • Hand tool allows you to move your image while zoomed in to more than 100% and a portion of it is out of view.
  • Edit toolbar is to change or add tool on your toolbar.
  • Rectangular marquee tool is needed to make a selection in the shape of a rectangle or a square.
  • Magic wand tool allows you to rapidly choose portions of your image and alter them independently.
  • Eye Dropper makes it simple to select colors from a variety of sources.
  • Brush tool is needed to paint.
  • History brush tool allows you to paint over areas of a picture to restore them to a previous historical state.
  • Gradient tool allows for a gentle transition between several hues.
  • Dodge tool is used to brighten a portion of a picture without changing the hue or saturation.
  • Horizontal type tool allows you to add horizontal text to your images.
  • Rectangle tool is used to create vector and pixel-based rectangle shapes and routes.
  • Zoom tool is for zooming in or out an image.

Layers and Filters

Layers on photoshop is like stacked transparent sheet which gives you the ability to adjust each drawing on a different layer to make it easier. Filter is a method of altering an image's size, colors, shading, and other features.

After getting familiar with the pen tool and getting to know about the introduction of digital photography and imaging also photoshop, I went with the other assignment which is take three photo's from the internet made with photoshop and state why it is our favorite art work.

This artwork makes me feel relaxed, it feels both familiar and comforting. It makes me want to stay there and unwind for a bit. The color palette is soothing to the eyes and aesthetically pleasing. The moon gives me the feeling that it is time for us to take a rest, the relaxing effect was also enhanced by the cloudy background. The photo also gives an impression of fluffiness, which is both fascinating and relaxing.

I adore it when collages are made with cool tones, they seem bold and yet soothing that leave an impression that words can't describe. I like the brush strokes and the watercolor backdrop, as well as how they placed the color palette on the side. Because it consists of a few photos yet takes up space all throughout, I feel that the composition is somewhere between overloaded yet simple.

I'm a sucker for anything that has to do with horror. This picture gave me the creeps, the impression of cold air, racing hearts, and goosebumps, which I enjoy in images with low lighting and high contrast. You can tell the girl's tension just by the way she glances. I like how the background tells a lot of stories, the baby cart tells that someone may live there a long time ago and the trash described how this place is abandoned.

INSTRUCTION

Week 2 :

We were given our first task to create three physical collages with the proper design composition. I decided to use blue because it's my favorite color and I wanted to incorporate some Indonesian elements. I gathered all of the images I needed, cut them into pieces, and then put them in the arrangement I desired. I chose to go with golden ratio, the triangle, and golden frame/section as my composition

The Golden Ratio

The golden ratio was my first choice since it is the most common composition in art and photography. It forms a spiral, and if the spiral lands on the main focus, a golden ratio composition is created. I then went ahead and create the second composition.

I choose the triangle because I believe it is one-of-a-kind, it is not a common art composition, but it generates a unique composition that distinguishes it from all others. I don't believe I did the finest job, but it was still fun to give an attempt. I then continued with the last composition and I chose golden section/frame as my last design composition.

The Golden Frame

I don't really know how I feel about this one. It's all over the place but it uses all the space given. I still prefer the other two compositions I chose.

Week 3:

Next, we were given another assignment which is to create a digital collage out of the 12 images given. It was kind of a hard task for me because the images are totally random and I have a hard time composing them, but I finally finished 3 designs.

First attempt

Second attempt

Third attempt

Wasn't easy for me to cut those images and arrange them but it made me learn so much about the lasso tool.

FEEDBACK

Week 2

My canvas is quite empty so the triangle composition works well compared to the others.

REFLECTIONS

Collages are interesting to create because we can turn random elements into beautiful art, as well as turn those random elements into a story. Digital collage also taught us how to use Photoshop, including how to cut and paste images and work with layers.
