Week 4 - Harmony and Unity

Harmony

Harmony is an art design principle that relates to how nicely all of the visual aspects interact. Colors, form, proportion, and other factors may all lend to harmony.

Unity

Unity is a design principle that lends a work of art cohesion or coherence. It is a picture's wholeness or completeness. Unity can also be made by combining the message and form of the artwork.

In art, unity and variation are frequently addressed simultaneously, because a good piece of art must have both unity and diversity, and there must be a balance between the two. Proportion and scale are also art rules that indicate how big, where, and how much one element is in proportion to another. Proportion and size are complicated and crucial factors in creative creation.

Week 5 - Symbol, Word & Image

Symbol

Symbol is something that represents or stands for something, such as an animal, a plant, or an item that represents something difficult to depict in a photograph or sculpture.

Word & Image

Word & Image in art, also known as text art, is a type of art that mostly consists of text in the form of words or phrases; it is a blend of language with visual images. Making a picture or depiction of anything is characterized as an image.

INSTRUCTION

Ms. Jinchi assigned us the responsibility of creating two artworks, one for each category we selected. I went with Unity and Symbol for this assignment. I wanted to start with unity, so I did some visual research and came upon this image.

I like how the monkeys are made with the elements of repetition that are very identical and how they almost hold hands. I also stumbled across this image and took it as an inspiration.

I feel like these flocks of flamingos would be empty even if only one flamingo is taken away which means the unity principle in this art is quite strong. Those two images made me have this thought about having identical repetition but still adding a few different elements so the whole picture wouldn't consist of only one element. I later came out with a sketch of a couple dragons.

Fig 3.2 Unity Sketch First Attempt

I like the sketch but don't think it held the unity principle strong. I then made another attempt and came up with this.

Fig 3.3 Unity Sketch Second Attempt

It's not the best but I think the overall outcome will be very cute, also there are some identical repetitions (ducks with hat) and unidentical repetitions (duck, but female) and I think later on I will add some leave because the female duck may or may not be considered as repetition.

Fig 3.4 Unity Final Outcome

I believe the final result embodies the strong unity principle since even if only one duck is removed, the image will seem incomplete and lack the feeling of wholeness. I then moved on to the other principle, which I have chosen to do the symbol. I feel like I have taken a lot of a good example for symbol especially when I go out because most street/traffic sign represents a symbol.

I then browse around the Internet for some examples of symbols and I came across this image.

Fig 3.6 Symbols

I still don't know what symbol I will be making, but I have this thought that I slept a lot so maybe illustrate it into a symbol.

Fig 3.7 Sleeping Sketch

I don't like it but I wanted to take a shot so I proceed with it and came up with this.

Fig 3.8 Sleeping Final Sketch

I don't like it, so I wanted to make another attempt. While I was in my hometown celebrating Eid al-Fitr, the local ice rink offered a discount, so my family and I went there to have some fun, and I was wondering cause I had never seen a sign or symbol of people ice skating, at least not in my country, so I tried it to make it.

Fig 3.9 Ice Skating Sketch

It was a really rough sketch but I think I can manage to work with it, so I continued to do so.

Fig 3.10 Ice Skating Symbol First Attempt

It's too cartoony for a sign, especially on the bottom half, which includes the legs, boots, and sword; nevertheless, it's still not basic enough to be a symbol, so I simplified it some further, resulting in this.

Fig 3.11 Ice Skating Symbol Second Attempt

It's certainly better and less cartoony, but I think it looks more like people skiing on a little ski board rather than people skating, so I modified it again and came up with this.

Fig 3.12 Ice Skating Symbol Final Outcome

I think this one here represents symbol well since it's not cartoony, but also gave the image of a person ice skating, I also added the border to make it more symbol-like.

FEEDBACK

Everything works great so there is no need to have a change but I can explore more on the pose for symbolism if I have time.

REFLECTIONS

I have a hard time understanding those principles, but after having some visual research and explanation I finally managed to understand and make something with that design principles. I like how each principle can result in a very different outcome.
