LECTURES

Composition Theory (Fore, Mid, and Background)

Composition in art is the way they are put together to create the feeling of completion that is aesthetically pleasing. Students will be exposed to composition in the visual arts in this curriculum unit, encompassing design principles such as balance, symmetry, and repetition, as well as one of the formal elements: line.

  • Foreground is the element closest to you.
  • Background is the element farthest for you.
  • Midground is the element between the farthest and closest.

Composition Theory (Perspective)

The method of perspective drawing is used to generate a linear sense of depth. Objects appear to shrink in size at a steady pace as they move away from the viewer. For example, you can see the different depths of the boxes below.

One Point Perspective

A one-point perspective drawing has a single vanishing point, which is generally (but not always) immediately opposite the viewer's eye and usually (but not always) on the horizon line.

Two Point Perspective

Two Point Perspective is a method of sketching items that may be rationally placed into a geometric, grid-like framework. This two-point drawing approach is characterized by two vanishing points that indicate two convergence points separated by an indefinite distance.

Three Point Perspective

Three point perspective is a type of linear perspective that employs three vanishing points, each of which is used to provide a sense of depth on a two-dimensional surface.

3-Acts Structure

The three-act structure is a narrative framework that separates stories into three parts: Act One, Act Two, and Act Three, or a beginning, middle, and finish.

  • Act 1 - Setup
  • Act 2 - Confrontation
  • Act 3 - Resolution

REPORTS

Lecture Report 4

Frozen Scene
https://screenrant.com/frozen-important-scenes

In this scene, Elsa uses her power by mistake and created sharp ice. Here, we can see that this scene uses the foreground, midground, and background.

Frozen Scene Breakdown

The blue outline defines the foreground which is the ice spike since it was the closest thing to the viewer's eye/camera view. The midground is the three men with the red outline and the background is the three men on the very back. It gave the viewer more focus on the ice spike as it was the main object on this scene.

Frozen Scene

Another frozen scene that uses foreground, midground, and background is this one. In this scene, Prince Hans is about to kill Elsa, we can see the different ground uses by the distance of them.

Frozen Scene Breakdown

We can see here Elsa which is about to get killed as the main point and she was put in the very front of the viewer's eye, it is the foreground which is outlined by the blue line. Prince Hans is the midground with the red outline and the background is the towers covered in ice outlined with the color yellow.

PRACTICAL

We were given a tutorial on how to color, and how to use tools such as pen tool, line tool, effect/distort/zigzag, warp tool, layers, etcetera in Adobe Illustrator.

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 2 | Decisive Movement

For this project we are assigned to create an animated artwork with simple movement from the movie that we picked, it can be our favorite movie, a movie that reminds us of our childhood, or simply any good movie we recommend. Our simple animation should include the relation with grounds (foreground, background, midground) and also add a logline. I browsed around the internet for minimalistic posters and movie scenes and I stumbled across these images.

I wanted to go with something like that. I remember back then when I first started to enjoy horror cartoons because of watching coraline, the art style, storyline, color scheme and everything is just so mesmerizing. I gathered some scene that I think is fun to recreate.

I started to sketch my ideas to adjust and add some grounds (foreground, midground, background) to create my poster. I went with both scenes to figure out which one is better.

Fig 1.5 Sketch Attempt 2

I decided to went with fig 1.4 (sketch attempt 1) since I think the second sketch doesn't really do it well, the antagonist character's body doesn't suit to be a big silhouette and I just think the color in the first scene is more aesthetically pleasing. I proceed with the first sketch on Adobe Illustrator, unfortunately, the application crashes midway while I was illustrating it, good thing I already exported the file.

I then exported the layers and proceed to do it in Adobe Photoshop.

Fig 1.7 Animation Attempt

I came up with this as my gif, but I think it's missing the Icon of Coraline which is the button eye.

Fig 1.8 First Animated Poster

I added button eyes cause I think it's quite important to keep her icon and this was the final result.

FINAL OUTCOME:

FEEDBACK

REFLECTION

I Find this assignment interesting and it forces me to learn how to make a movie poster which is very useful in the future. It's quite difficult since I have to work with many layers for the background but I feel very accomplished by doing this. It may not be the best but the process of finishing this assignment gave me a lot of experience which I think will benefit me a lot in the future.
