INSTRUCTIONS :

Task 2 | Typography Expression and Communication

We were given the assignment to create a two-page editorial spread. We have to create a headline using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign for the text formatting and compose those two elements together into the final piece. I started this task with a visual research on some headline for references.

Fig 1.1 Visual Research

I noticed for the headline, they express the word for headline just like in task 1 type expression. After getting some visual research I began to do the sketch and I wanted to go with something simple.

Fig 1.2 First Sketch

I made the word follow curves around the letter "C" to illustrate how it follows the curvy shape.

Fig 1.3 Second Sketch

The word follow kind of  curves to illustrate how it tries to follow the word "code".

Fig 1.4 Third Sketch

The right bottom of the "W" is expanded to illustrate how to wanted to follow the word "code".

Fig 1.5 Fourth Sketch

The word follow curves downwards to illustrate that it follows the word "code". After having all these sketches I decided to go with the first sketch. I then moved on to adobe illustrator to make the headline.

Fig 1.6 Headline First Sketch

After having the headline I proceed to work with the two-pages editorial spread in Adobe InDesign, I followed the instruction to have the size of 200x200mm, leave facing pages turned off, 10mm margin, 5mm column gutter.

Fig 1.7 Outcome

After having feedback, I was told that I needed to change the headline so I proceed with the fourth sketch cause I think it will work.

Fig 1.8 Second Headline

After having my second headline I changed it to be the headline of my final two-pages editorial spread

I realized I was using the wrong font, so I changed it to Futura STD

These are the points that I used;
  • Font used : Futura STD
  • Font Size (10)
  • Line Lenght (42)
  • Text Leading (2 Points bigger than font size)
  • Ragging (Left justification)
  • Cross allignment
  • No orphans or widows

FEEDBACK

Week 7

General feedback : the words from the headline have to express itself.

Specific feedback : Needed to change the headline and make it express the word.

REFLECTIONS

Experience:
This assignment shows me how to make a headline using the lesson given from the first task which is type expression and put it on an editorial spread and manage it.

Observation:
I feel like type expression is the key to almost anything related to typography. I also often forgot the rules of text formatting so it is best to always refer back to the tutorial incase anything happens.

Findings:
I find that headlines are really important to gave the reader a first impression.
