LECTURES
Observation is the most powerful and easy tool that all humans have. You can observe a work of art from its composition, color palette, and art style, to the sense or feeling that it conveys. It inspires you to produce your art and makes it easier to create. Observation may also help you discover mistakes and find solutions to them; it provides us with knowledge about the item, location, or thing that we're observing.
Sense of Place refers to the emotional relationships and attachments that people form or feel in certain locales and surroundings. It may be a place from your childhood, an incident from your everyday life, or simply a location that holds a personal memory for you. It's supposed to offer you a sensation or feeling when you think about or be in that location; it might be pleasant feelings like happiness or comfort, or bad emotions like fear or loneliness.
INSTRUCTION
For this task, we are assigned to create an illustration about a sense of place, which is a place that gave us a feeling or emotions that are also unforgettable. I feel like there's always a place that reminds us of our childhood, the happiness, and joyfulness of playing with our childhood friends, and never thinking about a single problem really make that place have a special memory in your mind. I just moved to Palembang, which is located in Sumatra's south island, and want to stay for some time. It has only been a week, but I'm already missing my own home, where there's a small forest with a mini river where my friends and I used to go. We would cross the rivers, and I recall one occasion when we attempted to catch fish in the rivers but were unsuccessful, and we went back home drenched. Years later, he moved to another house, and we stopped playing together. However, whenever I wanted to go someplace and passed the road where the mini river is located, it always brought back my recollection and that emotion that I can't define even if the place is not as beautiful as before and kind of abandoned now. So I wanted to illustrate that place with a twist of fantasy. I first searched for a visual reference of a forest and came across with this picture.

The size of the river near my house varies, some of the small rivers are the exact same size as that picture, but the color doesn't really bring out the feelings so I searched for a landscape that has a good color scheme and I think this picture's color palette (fig 1.1) kind of feels more alive.

I remember exactly when my home was really lively and the world felt so colorful and every time I think about my childhood the exact same color scheme from the picture above clicks in my mind. It's kind of sad how I see the colors from my life fading away and becoming dull. I feel like the only color that I feel alive in my life right now is blue, so I have an idea to play around with the color scheme and try to paint it in blue like this (fig 1.2).

Since I fall in love with the color blue, I felt more comfortable imagining my childhood place in a blueish color scheme.

I'm kind of satisfied with the sketch so I may not try to sketch another, but will try to play around with the blue color.

I'm quite satisfied with the result and I think the dark blue color suits what I wanted in my mind. The color scheme also gave me a sense of calmness, which is what I imagined every time I remember about the mini river near my house. The naked lady also reminds me of when I'm running around naked after a swim when I was a child.
