Task 3 / Type Exploration and Application

LECTURES:

All lectures are completed in Task 1 Exercises

INSTRUCTIONS:

TASK 3 | Type Exploration and Application

In this project, we are asked to design a typeface based on our personal preferences. The finished product would be the designed typeface in its application.

Proposal slide:

LETTERFORMS

After showing Mr. Vinod my proposal, he asked me what I wanted to work with and I chose the chili font from task 2 and we agreed. I began to sketch more alphabets but I heavily refer to a font that makes it too similar, Mr. Vinod then suggested that I don't refer heavily to or modify the font.

I tried to refer to my handwriting and began sketching in Procreate.

I moved it to AI and made a bit of adjustment to the sizes and then continue to import it to FontLab, installed it, and tried it on AI again.

After a moment of looking back, I realized it was still looking very abstract and all over the place. I feel like I should refine it more so I tried doing the lowercase first while referring to the chili but at the same time making adjustments and more refinement.

APPLICATION

Since I'm doing a chili font, for the application I'm going with food merchandise. I wanna put my key artwork to have a spicy vibe, I then began creating the mockups.

Since I'm changing the whole font, I also changed the typework and post.

FEEDBACK

Week 10:

Don't heavily refer to a font especially since it could lead to plagiarism.

REFLECTIONS

Experience:

I struggle a lot with this task, for me, it's hard to keep consistent in finishing this one long assignment for the font since my health is in a not-so-great condition, but I feel relieved once I know that I'm capable of keeping consistent.

Observation:

I found that it's okay to refer to some random object but also extra refine it at the same time.

Findings:

I find that it's ok to restart all over since the first uppercase that I did was a total mess rather than forcing it to work.

FURTHER READINGS

Typographic Systems

Kimberly Elam

Based on this book, I was able to obtain a deeper grasp of typographic systems. I'm also reminded of the value of design concepts like repetition, emphasis, and contrast in strengthening typographic systems.
