Final Project / Stop Motion

INSTRUCTIONS

For the final project, we must collaborate with someone to create a stop-motion animation. We'll have to create everything from scratch, including the screenplay, storyboard, character design, editing, sound effects, and so on. I chose to work alongside my chair mate, Reenah. We all agree on "bullying" being the central topic. We decided to utilize paper cuts for the stop motion, so I started sketching up a simple design for the figure so that we could easily move it. We both created a storyboard for each of our parts and then combined them; once done, we decided to begin filming the stop-motion.

Story board:

On week 11 our lecturer Mr. Martin posted that he booked all of us a session at the photography studio so we began our first shoot there, we cut out our origami paper for the character and we found that working with paper is as tricky as working with clay while we thought it was going to be simpler.

I'm quite glad that the character we use is very simple because even cutting the origami is a bit tricky. We glued some of the layers together, but not on the layers or parts that we're gonna move for example the hand, hair, etc.

We used my phone to take photographs for the stop-motion since it will be easy to transfer and modify the file later. We compiled the image based on which scene it was so we could stay on track. I uploaded the file to Google Drive and Reenah compiled the picture to a movie, which she then provided to me for adjustments and sound effects.

It took me and Reenah about two sessions and each session takes about 3-4 hours to shoot including cutting the origami, gluing them, making adjustments from the storyboard, etc.

This was hard for us both since we got shaky hands and even the slightest move from us can ruin the whole scene. We did a lot of retakes and so far this is the best we can do, we believe we can execute better in the future.

REFLECTIONS

I always find stop motion very hard and time-consuming. I'm glad I can find ways to elevate what we have for the stop-motion through editing. This assignment gave me a lot of knowledge about how framing works and how each frame is really important, especially since that I'm specializing in animation.
