Project 2A&B / Walking and Jumping Animation

LECTURES

Week 7:

We have been given the task of animating our character to leap for project 2B and walk for project 2A this week. The presentation walked us through the animation principles and how to animate a character frame by frame. As my character design leans more toward realism than cartoony, I did not place as much emphasis on animation concepts like squash and stress to keep the realistic appearance.

Week 8:

This week, we got feedback on the walking animation and learned how to animate our character's jumping motion frame by frame. Since my character is a person, I was advised that we sketch the line of action first and also refer to a video of humans jumping.

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 2A | (Walking Animation)

I started breaking down each frame of a video of a person walking after studying walking motion in order to have a reference before I started drawing. I started drawing the basic animation when I understood the motion, adjusting the location, size, and frame before adding the character's appearance to the initial sketch. I lost the rough sketch but I still have the unrevised sketch without colors.

I attempted to slightly tilt the perspective when walking, but I didn't really like it, so I adjusted it so that the perspective would remain fixed while I kept adding color and animation.

After that, I proceeded with the jumping animation, breaking the pose frame by frame as I looked for references. To make it easier for me to finish later, I created a rough sketch before adding the character design.

I was quite satisfied with it so I proceeded to sketch the outline with the character's appearance, before proceeding with the colors I asked Mr. Kamal for feedback and he suggested that I bend the knees while jumping in the air to avoid making it look like a "ballet" or "hantu bungkus" so I made revision and add some colors to it.

This Assignment really helps me to push myself to imagine a person walking and drawing it frame by frame and movement by movement. I struggled a lot in the first week after receiving the assignment but I watched some tutorials and by the end of the deadline, I feel like my imagination improved.
