INSTRUCTIONS
Final Project | Animated Infographic
In this assignment, we are required to make an animated infographic with our final project team. The team consists of Tracy, ZhiWei, and me. The animation has to be 1920 x 1080, we chose "Life Cycle of Plastic" since we don't see many people choosing that topic for their final project. First, we divided the steps for us so we could keep track of our progress for this project.
- Canva slides
- Research document
- Script
- Storyboard
- Script breakdown
- Animation
Here are also some of the requirements for this project:
- Use questions about what, why, where, when, and how in the building of your narrative before transferring the information onto your storyboard
- The minimum duration is 1.5 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes
- Must include a form of data or statistics
- Must use question technique and provide an answer
Week 1 & 2:
We first created the Canva slides since that part has to be updated every week depending on our progress throughout finishing the final project.

Then we proceeded with the research document, we also highlighted the important data (how many plastic bottles are produced and wasted every year, temperature to mold plastic, etc.) to put in our video for educational purposes.

It took us quite some time, but I'm happy we finished it on time. I feel like we nailed all of the important information needed for a reference for the video.
Week 3:
We proceeded to do the character design and storyboard so I started some sketches in Procreate for the character design and searched for some color palettes for reference. I wanted the character to be cute but yet simple so that it's easier for us to animate but yes pleasing to look at.

I like how the character turns out the way I expected. I had to twist my head around to make the color palette work but overall it looks great and cute.
Week 4 & 5:
Next is the storyboard that took a lot of tears and time to make. We draw and edit it to be an "almost done" product so that we have a clear vision of what to animate and to show our lecturer for feedback and what to do or what not to do for our final product which is the three-minute animation.

This part took us a lot of time since we had to spin our heads to think about how to animate each scene. I am also not satisfied with the voice-over since I don't have a proper mic to record the voice-over that in result it creates a lot of crisps in the sounds, and also my Indo accent sometimes takes over. Still, in mean meantime, we have to proceed to break down the storyboard, and script for each of us to animate for the final product.

Week 6:
We did most of the visual elements in Adobe Illustrator and animation in After Effects. I render each scene rather than doing it on one go to avoid the file getting corrupted. I also compiled and added sound effects in Filmmora rather than doing it on After Effects since it has more transitions and overlays/effects. For the voice-over, since none of us is a native English speaker we decided to get someone to do the voice-over for us, luckily I have an Indonesian friend in Canada who grew up with a lot of native speakers in her life that she developed an "almost native" accent, so I asked her to do the voice-over for us. I did the animation's first minute which are scenes 1 until 10. It took me almost two weeks to do it since I had to divide the time between animating and studying for my other module test which was "Chinese Language 1", a lot of coffee was consumed this week.

I am quite satisfied with the result, I feel like I can improve on the movements of some visual elements but overall is great. The color palette works and the animation style is quite consistent. I then waited for the rest of my group member to finish their part, I waited around 4 days before I am able to compile all of the scenes to add background music and sound effects.
Week 7:
After my groupmates uploaded their scenes, I proceeded to do the editing, at first I thought this part would not take more than one night to finish but I underestimated it. I have to thrive in another coffee night before doing suhoor. It took my roughly two days to complete.
Honestly, it was very challenging for me to do the editing like transitions, effects, and overlay, but the hardest part was to find background music that actually matches the vibe of the video which I never struggled with before. I also had to make adjustments to my groupmate's AI files to maintain the art style in case it drifted too far. I also had to tweak a lot of backgrounds since some of the characters or assets have tangents with the colors.

I am quite happy with the result, there are some parts that I can definitely improve on, but taking this module on a short semester with limited time made me feel like I achieved the target I wanted. I enjoyed most of the assignments given in this module.
FEEDBACK
Week 5:
Mr. Shamsul said our storyboard is well-made and we have a clear visualization of what to animate for the final product. He suggested we add some highlighted important data like how many plastic bottles are produced and wasted, the temperature to mold plastic, etc.
Week 6:
We were told to change a bit of the visualization in scene 26 since it doesn't make sense how the bottle died on top of his grave and not getting buried. He also recommended we change some of the transitions like in the ending scene.
REFLECTIONS
This assignment was absolutely challenging, especially in keeping the art style consistent but we managed. I found that there's a lot of things I can improve like the movement of the characters, better transition etc. It also teaches me about teamwork, how we have to be able to work together, maintain good communication, and learn to listen to others.
