Project 2 / Channel Bumper

LECTURES

All lectures are completed in Task 1 Exercises Task 1 Exercises

INSTRUCTIONS

In this project, we have to use information about any channel/brand that was proposed (*existing or fictional), We also need to design a mood board that reflects the idea/concept behind this channel style guide which describes the final mood that has to be achieved. animatics involves selecting the right audio to enhance the motion storyboarding. First, we have to make drafts and try a large set of conceptual concepts by digitization with the corresponding software. The assignment will required to have the final output of a 10 – 15 sec video (*. mp4, h2. 64, 16:9 File 1920 X 1080, 25 fps, ACC, 48kHz, uploaded to the YouTube channel.

Research

For the first part, I created the mood board for the channel I chose. I love to game in my free time and currently, I'm really enjoying Valorant. The company that produces the game "Riot Games" puts a lot of effort into making each of their games artistic. I really love the graphics from all the media that Riot Games created. I love how their art style is a bit geometric but realistic at the same time as you can see here the planes on their faces are very visible and they maximize it to shade their artwork which somehow works very well.

I did my mini research about the company Riot Games and how to learn how they portray their artstyle. I found the trailer for their official release of a game called Valorant.

I then proceeded to create the mood board containing elements I wanted to use, how I portrayed Riot Games, and my vision for this project. I gathered some of the elements from their website, their characters, and what I wanted to put and compiled it all together, I came out with this for the mood board.

From what I gathered, most of their art style shades in planes and they always have a pop of colors. I have some vision of how to animate the part but first I need to sketch out the storyboard as this project aims to "tell" the channel/brand for 15 seconds, and the next project aims to deliver the product for 30 seconds.

After the storyboard is finished, I start by cutting up the character's PNG and placing it on different layers in Photoshop for me to animate in After Effects later. this part is not as hard as it seems but I do need to color some parts to fill the missing gaps. I separated the ponytail, bangs, side hair, upper body, hands, eyes, and also kunai.

I then animate in the After Effects, it was quite tricky since I had to make a lot of adjustments. I finally did and imported the composition to the compilation.

The second part is the gun shooting bullets. This project wants us to focus more on the elements that already exist. I searched for some gun elements in Valorant and so far, I liked the silhouette of the "Sherrif" the best. Since the color palette won't work well, I had to block it with the color black and use red for the background as Valorant's main color palette is red and white, and the black silhouette suits it the best.

I feel like the animation shooting is too bland and the negative positive space is just unbalanced. Therefore I made an element which is the spark the gun makes when it's shooting out the bullet. For the sides, I added some elements that I made in the previous project 1. I didn't like the third scene from the storyboard therefore, I had to change and go with what I was thinking at the moment. I forgot I haven't added pops of colors as what Riot's game "Valorant" consists of. In the game, we are able to buy skins for guns and most of the skins always have a pop of colors. I chose three skins to put in this project which were Reaver, Glitchpop, and Elderflame. Reaver is one of the most popular skins, Glitchpop is one of the most color-popped skins that exist in Valorant and Elderflame is one of the oldest and coolest uniquely shaped skins.

Since the color of the bullet's silhouette black didn't work well with the pops of color, I had to tweak it to white to get the viewer still focus on it without getting lost. I also gave the bullet some movement first to let the viewer focus on it.

For the next scene, I want the viewer to know that Valorant is a team-based 5vs5 PC game. So I searched for an existing computer icon and added the player icon on my own. I made the eyes a slanted first-quarter moon-shaped since in the pro scenes players always looked so focused and sharp.

After I compiled all of the motion that I did in After Effects, I added the music that I had chosen before and added a bit of effect for the editing like the glitch effect to match with either the transition or the music beat, I came up with this as the final result.

I'm glad I've been able to execute it with most of the elements originally from Valorant. I also feel great about being able to focus on red as Riot's main color, and to also give a pop of colors like in the scene where it shows a couple of skins from Valorant, and to include the elements and what's iconic from the game as well.

FEEDBACK:

Try to use most of the elements that already exist/created by the company/brand/product instead of creating our own unless it's necessary.

REFLECTIONS:

I found this assignment useful to develop our skills in marketing and branding. I wouldn't say this was easy nor difficult, I think it's between both as it's easy for us that we don't have to create each element on our own, but yet it's quite hard to think on how to portray the scene that reflects the channel in only 15 seconds. Overall, it was quite fun to do.
