INSTRUCTIONS

This project required us to make a 3-4 minute auditory experience that will take listeners to an otherworldly soundscape through the artful work of audio. First, I began with something I did for a college English class years ago: I wrote out a short description of the scene in Google Docs, drafted details, and chose the foreground and background sound differences. Foreground sounds are those that capture the center of the audio world: character action or significant environmental elements, while background sounds are underplayed ambient noises that come to the fore without blowing away the main sounds.

After the scenario outline was finalized, I started the editing phase in Adobe Audition. For this piece, I layered and balanced the audio tracks so that each sound was clear, and still sounded immersive in its given space. I worked on Adobe Audition's EQ and reverb tools to enhance the whole and put the foreground sounds in front of the background noises giving them a little more weight. Finally, the process of editing was much more involved with precise volume adjustments and spatial effects needed to make this auditory journey feel cohesive and exciting.

Overall, I think the final piece is very good because it tells a great story with sound, it is very immersive. The foreground and background elements provide very visual contrasts that work very well together and gently enhance the atmosphere while directing the audience’s attention to important moments. Through balancing in clarity and in-depth, I was able to bring them into the scene so that they would obviously enter the scene. This project demonstrated the awesome power of audio storytelling, and how audio can come together and bring a story to life if you craft sound design very carefully.
