Project 2 / Theme Scene-Based Modeling

LECTURES

All lectures are completed in Task 1 Exercises Task 1,2,3 and 4 Exercises

INSTRUCTIONS

In this project, we must apply the lectures learned from week one to create an isometric or diorama composition. The first step of our process is to find reference images or blueprints that we would like to replicate. With all of the features taught in the course, the modeling shall be created in Blender. We have to work on applying the correct colors, lighting, and finish to give a realistic texture of how it looks. Lighting and rendering will be, depending on the scene, set to either the ‘Eevee’ or ‘Cycle’ rendering engine that will provide the best look. Lastly, we will generate our resultant outcome with intended aspects as the format being PNG and dimension of 1280 x 720. The goal of this project will be to demonstrate our mastery and usage of the tools related to 3D modeling in Blender as well as texturing, lighting, and rendering.

At one moment I got tired in class so I started drawing what I wanted to do for this project on a piece of paper. Realizing that so much detail could not be put on a piece of paper as small as an A5, I had to extend it on another piece of paper and that's when I realized I could build a new environment linked to the first one by a bridge. I soon drew this new scene out and combined it by drawing a bridge with the other one. I like to first finish the sketch since it is difficult for me to render the colors in 3D. As I said earlier, finishing the sketch with colors is very helpful when I am rendering, so I collected some mood boards to establish what kind of colors I needed and what kind of atmosphere the project was going to have.

Afterward, I transferred the sketch to Photoshop to attempt color rendering to match the mood board created for the 2D sketch to later use as a reference for the 3D modeling.

This took me quite a long time, but since I enjoy drawing, I enjoyed it throughout the process. After drawing the isometric view in 2D, I moved ahead to do the 3D modeling using the software Blender. First of all, I assembled the two landscapes to become a whole with a bridge connecting the two different zones. After that, I started to model the fountain and place it as centered to serve as a basis for adding more details to it.

I proceeded to create the planes for the land which I already plan originally to have a pond along the middle of the raised ground in the middle. Seeing most of the references, I noticed that rocks always divide the land from the water, so I completed the modeling of the land sides with rocks. Back at my house, there is a long pond/lake just 20 meters in front of it. There is a pedestrian bridge that used to join two sides across this water channel but has since been damaged and never restored. As I kept on modeling this project, recalling this place made me feel some sort of nostalgia.

Next, I added lily pads, flowers, and bigger rocks on the second island. Although the pond seemed okay to me, the bridge seemed a little plain so I placed some vines on it which I intended to put flowers later. After that, I decided to continue exploring and went to the other zone which has the fountain.

I  included some existing trees and bushes and also two park benches, I also added flowers on the vine on the side of the bridges. However, it still seemed plain when I began to render the colors into the model.

Going back to the mood board I saw that the references had a lot of pink flowers. Therefore, I incorporated many flowers into the bushes and combined pink and white flowers on the ground, which are on the sides of the fountain. Then I started painting the colors, lights, and textures.

Last but not least, I placed a street lamp for the lighting since the park always has it for evening light. I made the base from a cylinder and the lamp from a box model and joined them after completing both the body and the head.

There are a few things about my project that I have realized can use some enhancement. The major problem is that the lamp located at the very front hides the view of the fountain which I think is an important part of the scene, also, the colors of the bridge appear somewhat muted; they are neither striking nor plain, which leaves them feeling underwhelming. The white flower on the bridge does not seem to be nearly as lively as it should be. In this regard, I have been adjusting the color scheme and contrast in order to improve the general look of the work. I play around with different tones and saturations to have the right value while highlighting the fountain and the bridge as well as the flower.

I feel like the color white suits it more since somehow it makes the pink flower on the ground, pond, and trees stand out. The lamp is also a nice detail which doesn't take away the attention that the fountain has. At first, I wanted to change the rock color to have a blue undertone, but it looks like the lighting in each environment is different. The flower on the bridge is also there but doesn't take too much attention away. Mr. Kamal then announced in the group that some of the students use existing models that can be categorized as plagiarism. I asked Mr. Kamal if I had to change the model that I used and he said yes and to not use any external resources. I then began creating my own trees and bushes.

The first model that I had to recreate was the bench. I modeled it from the base of a box, for the seating area I used 4 planks, and for the resting area I used 3 however the huge gap between in made it look awkward so I added one more plank to the resting area to make it equal.

Fig 1.9 Blender modeling in progress

I used the loop cut to make the handrest, the long plank to support the resting area and sitting area, and also the legs for the bench to sit on. The next model that I had to recreate was the trees and bush. Since most of the models are low poly I decided to recreate the trees in low poly style.

Fig 1.10 Blender modeling in progress

For this one, I decided to do a pine tree where I just needed to stack all of the leaves onto one creating a triangular shape. I also make a variety of cuts on the leaves so they don't look too plain, I also tilted some of them to the sides. After I'm done I join them and copy-paste them to fill out the empty areas of the side of the land. For the next tree, I focus on making the branches first.

Fig 1.11 Blender modeling progress

Same with the rest I am going low poly, I then decided to keep the leaves in a circular shape and make a variety of them in different sizes and stack them up onto one another.

Fig 1.12 Blender modeling in progress

I then again joined them and copy paste them to fill the empty areas on the side of the lands, I also started tweaking each of the leaves again by their size and stretching them a bit so that it varies from one and another. Lastly, I added the pink and white flowers back to the tree as how I rendered it in the first place. Not to forget, I also added the bush so that the sides don't look too plain and avoid some awkwardness on the roots of the trees.

This assignment is great to give our brain an exercise about creating an environment that people often avoid when drawing or creating composition since they always focus too much on characters that often, the background or supporting elements are neglected or not given enough attention.

FEEDBACK:

Do not use existing models; including trees and bushes.

REFLECTIONS:

I believe that by finishing this project I have learned quite a number of things 3D modeling and composition. I understood that composition of environment or background / world are important. Overall, it has been a great project since I was able to practice 3D modeling and ensure that I delivered good work while considering that the scenes were not too complex but yet satisfying to look at.
